New Accolade for The Abencerraje

Top 20The Abencerraje: A New Translation has been a hit since it was first published a year ago. Within a month of release, it attained Top 20 status on the Amazon Literary Fiction list. More importantly, it also received high praise in unsolicited reviews from sensitive wordsmiths who love history.

Now, the greatest compliment imaginable: the dual language soft cover version has been adopted as a textbook for a course this autumn at Sarah Lawrence College.

The footnotes in the English version were created with university students in mind, so I’m thrilled to have a chance to see whether they work for this audience. I’m open to any suggestions professors or instructors have after using the book in a classroom setting. I’d love to make this translation a useful and attractive book that garners even more readers for this enchanting tale.

El Lazarillo digital

Para conmemorar el aniversario de su publicación, pongo por fin la noticia acerca de uno de mis libros favoritos.

La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades es la autobiografía irónica y despiadada de un joven pobre de siglo XVI. Con un sentido de humor muy agudo, critica la sociedad del momento, de la que se muestran sus vicios y actitudes hipócritas, sobre todo las de los clérigos y religiosos. Es la precursora de la novela picaresca por su realismo, la narración en primera persona, la estructura itinerante, el servicio a varios amos y la ideología moralizante y pesimista.

Esta es su mejor oportunidad para leer una obra muy divertida – y prohibida por la Inquisición – de que nació todo un género. Esta edición se basa en la primera conservada de Burgos de 1554, con las interpolaciones de la de Alcalá de Henares del mismo año claramente marcadas. El texto completo viene ilustrado por fotos pertinentes y por las portadas de las cuatro ediciones: Burgos, Amberes, Alcalá de Henares y Medina del Campo.

¡Las fotos las saqué yo durante mis estudios en Salamanca! Espero que te gusten. La de la portada es el mismo toro paleolítico que figura en el tratado del ciego durante una puesta de sol impresionante. Es un libro que realmente no te puedes perder.

Trotaconventos en la era digital

¡Mala landre me mate si no te gusta este libro!

La Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea es la obra más romántica y a la misma vez más ironizante de la Edad Media. Una simple historia de amor fracasado se convierte en intrigas, hechizos, robos y asesinatos cuando los “bellacos” sirvientes de Calisto sugieren que busque los servicios de la corrupta alcahueta Celestina. Los personajes recitan poesía y hacen el amor, pero por otro lado también violan, confabulan y matan. Son casi tan complicados como los seres humanos.

Hemos modernizado la ortografía para no impedir el disfrute del lector, pero no en vano pasan los siglos. Hemos preservado palabras que dan un toque decisivamente medieval porque de otra manera no se entendería igual. A veces parecerá inconsistente (e. g., a veces es “aucto” y otras es “auto”). Los escritores medievales no se preocupaban de estos detalles.

La carta de relación más fracasada

Continuamos nuestro Abril de los Descubrimientos con lo que puede ser el más grande fracaso de la historia.

Esta narrativa es la más interesante y fácil de leer de todas las “cartas de Indias” por ser la más extraña e irónica. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca pensó viajar a América como muchos héroes antes de él y ganar su fortuna y su honra. Un fracaso tras otro — de los que él nunca tiene la culpa — le impide cumplir su sueño y lo detiene flaco, hambriento y desesperado en el sureste de los hoy Estados Unidos durante diez años. La relación pretende ser una justificación de tanto tiempo con tan poca ganancia ante su Sacra, Cesárea y Católica Majestad, pero se ve claramente que Cabeza de Vaca es satisfecho de haber escapado con la vida. Esto en sí es una grande hazaña que merece gran recompensa monetaria (en la mente del autor).

Aún si no te gustan las relaciones de los descubrimientos, si lees el texto con el escepticismo con que fue originalmente recibida, esta narrativa te encantará.
