More Bestselling Medieval Work for Your Scholarly Appetite

We recently noticed that Law and Order in Medieval Spain is a huge bestseller on Kobo, reaching as high as number 1 in two categories and number 3 in a third. This came as a surprise, a very agreeable surprise!  Our new volume is conceived as a companion piece to Law and Order, and, in the same vein, is illustrated with cantigas and supporting artwork. Después de la publicación de nuestra edición de todos los poemas marianos de Gonzalo Berceo, hemos creído conveniente publicar para el público moderno en formato digital el resto de la obra del maestro inigualable del mester de clerecía. Incluímos cuatro vidas de santos: La Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos, La Vida de San Millán de la Cogolla, La Vida de Santa Oria y El martirio de San Lorenzo. Para final, Del Sacrificio de la Misa describe e interpreta los ritos de la misa medieval de forma bastane inspiradora.

El dialecto es de la La Rioja del siglo XIII. Gonzalo de Berceo aporta mucho al castellano moderno, pero para el lector que lea sus obras por primera vez, recomendamos el empleo de un diccionario del español antiguo. Poesía milagrosa en formato digital

El mes del siglo XIII continúa con el indiscutible maestro del mester de clerecía: Gonzalo de Berceo.

Es también el primer escritor castellano que firmó sus obras. En esta edición digital, presentamos los poemas en que alaba a la Virgen María. Su obra maestra, los Milagros de Nuestra Señora, cuenta 25 milagros de Santa María en los que premia, castiga, perdona, salva y sobre todo, ayuda a sus devotos. Se cuentan con un sentido de humor singular y muchos guiños al lector.

El Libro de Apolonio, al final en formato digital

Diciembre es el mes medieval aquí en Açedrex y estamos muy orgullosos de poder presentar a un rey que ha viajado desde lejos para estar aquí con nosotros en la era digital.

El Libro de Apolonio es la clásica aventura en el que un rey lo pierde todo y lo vuelve a recuperar a través de su generosidad, justicia y sabiduría. Es uno de los cuentos más populares de la Edad Media y cuando leas este texto encantador del mester de clerecía (siglo XIII), sabrás por qué.

El texto se basa en el del códice III-K-4 de la Biblioteca del Escorial y corregimos las variantes gráficas no significativas. Los cuartetos vienen numerados. The Law in Thirteenth-Century Spain, Now in Paperback

December is going to be Açedrex’s medieval month, and I’m happy to start it off with the fulfillment of a promise I made in September: Law and Order in Medieval Spain is now available in paperback here, and soon in many, many other venues where your library or bookstore will be able to order it.

The print edition is improved over the digital version with accurate plate numbering and overall editing. I’ve made it as affordable as possible and hope you will enjoy it. It’s a very good looking book.

The Long Arm of the Law in Medieval Spain

Although their milieu bore striking similarities to the Wild West, the people of medieval Spain were preoccupied with constructing valid laws and learning how best to abide by them. This obsession with legality comes out in epics, songs, stories, and even in miracles of the Virgin Mary.

Scholars have largely failed to see the usefulness of considering the different types of text produced under Alfonso X together, preferring to look at them in isolation or in conjunction with later literature. By investigating what the varied projects of Alfonso X’s scriptorium have in common, as well as how they diverge, we can better approach the underlying ideals manifested in each text. The thirteenth-century society they portray then comes into brilliant focus.

This book proposes a new direction for all such studies by suggesting unprecedented comparison between the Cantigas and the other texts from Alfonso X’s scriptorium. The legislative program, which presents the guidelines for daily life, manifests the king’s theoretical model for an ideal society. In the Cantigas de Santa Maria, time and again, these same ideals are dramatized for the edification of their public. In these songs, Alfonso allows Mary to work for him, promoting his political program for Castile. Specifically, the legal material not only supports Cantigas analyses, but also provides a theoretical context against which the miracle stories play out. Comparing the outcomes with the legal ideal gives a more realistic and comprehensive picture of every day life all over Alfonso X’s Iberia. Both texts fulfill a didactic function that unifies the king’s disparate works and forms the foundation of Castilian culture.
